Business Central

ERP built for growing small and mid-size businesses

What is Business Central?

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an all-in-one ERP (enterprise resource planning) solution for small and mid-size businesses. It handles financial management, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, project management, and service in one integrated system.

Business Central is the successor to Microsoft Dynamics NAV (formerly Navision). Companies on NAV can upgrade to Business Central either in the cloud or on-premises. The cloud version is the primary focus for Microsoft going forward and gets all new features first.

Business Central is typically right-sized for companies with 10-500 employees who have outgrown QuickBooks or generic accounting software but are not large enough to need Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations. Pricing starts much lower than F&O, and implementation is faster.

Who Business Central is for

Where businesses run into trouble

Business Central is powerful, but there are common pitfalls we see every day.

Choosing between Essentials and Premium

Business Central comes in two editions. Essentials covers most needs; Premium adds service and manufacturing. Choosing wrong means either paying for features you do not use or scrambling to upgrade mid-deployment.

Customizations via AL extensions

Business Central customizations must be written as AL extensions. Older NAV customizations do not port over cleanly; they need to be rewritten.

Permissions and security roles

Security setup is more complex than QuickBooks and simpler than F&O, but still requires thought. Misconfigured roles cause either data exposure or users blocked from what they need.

Integrating with Dynamics 365 CRM apps

Business Central and Dynamics 365 Sales/Customer Service are separate but can be integrated. Out-of-the-box integration is limited; most real-world integration needs require custom work.

Frequently asked questions

Is Business Central the same as Dynamics NAV?

Business Central is the cloud successor to Dynamics NAV (Navision). Microsoft rebranded in 2018. Under the hood, they share a lot of code and concepts, but Business Central has new cloud architecture, a new UI, and a different extension model (AL).

Can Business Central run on-premises?

Yes, though Microsoft is steering most customers to the cloud version. On-premises Business Central is still supported for companies that need local hosting for regulatory or technical reasons. New features arrive in the cloud first.

How much does Business Central cost?

Business Central Essentials is $70/user/month, Premium is $100/user/month, and Team Member is $8/user/month for users who only need read or limited access. A typical 25-user deployment runs around $2,000-2,500 per month in licensing before implementation costs.

Do I need a partner to implement Business Central?

In practice, yes. Microsoft sells Business Central through partners, and implementation involves setting up the chart of accounts, dimensions, workflows, permissions, and integrations. Most partners get implementations done in 2-4 months for a typical mid-size business.
